NRM’s Joseph Luzige has reclaimed the position of District Chairperson for Mityana, marking a political comeback five years after losing the seat to National Unity Platform (NUP)’s Mugisha Patrick Nshimye in the 2021 general elections.
Luzige emerged the winner in a closely watched contest that attracted three candidates. According to officially declared results, Luzige garnered 37,778 votes, defeating Annie Miriam Nassali Lugendo of NUP, who secured 18,119 votes, while independent candidate Gerald Mukwaya Kabanda polled 3,894 votes.
The results signal a shift in Mityana’s political landscape, with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) regaining control of a district it had lost in the previous election cycle.
Speaking shortly after being declared the winner, Luzige thanked voters for restoring their confidence in his leadership and promised to prioritise service delivery.
“The people of Mityana have given me another opportunity to serve,” Luzige said. “My immediate focus will be on improving health services, strengthening infrastructure, and ensuring that government programmes directly benefit our communities.”
He added that access to quality healthcare, better roads, and effective implementation of national development programmes would be central to his administration.
Luzige’s return comes at a time when voters in Mityana have increasingly demanded visible results from their leaders, particularly in social services and economic empowerment.
Political analysts say his victory reflects a growing expectation among residents for leaders who can translate government policies into tangible local benefits.
As he resumes office, Luzige faces the task of uniting a politically diverse district and delivering on his pledges, as Mityana positions itself ahead of the 2026 general elections.
